On the Political Economy of Coal Transitions – A multimethod Study

Coal-fired power generation is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions and thus displays a promising entry point for climate policies. Thus in my thesis I i) synthesize existing studies on coal transitions to provide an overview of the available literature using a systematic map methodology; ii) look into the political economy of coal on a national level (Philippines) by means of semi-structured stakeholder interviews; iii) conduct a discourse analysis based on the interviews from the Philippines and neighbouring countries; iv) highlight the international financing of coal plants. All four studies shed light on the political economy of coal transitions, their feasibility and the effectiveness of climate policies.
